Dr. Azouz will start with a physical exam and review x-ray imaging to rule out any erosion to the underlying bone. Surgery is required to remove the tumor and, in most cases, repair the nail bed.
Dr. Azouz will make an incision to expose the tumor. The nail may need to be removed and replaced depending on the tumor’s location. After removing the tumor, Dr. Azouz will reconstruct the nail bed and apply a dressing.
For the majority of hand surgeries, Dr. Azouz uses sedation and local anesthesia. Patients are given sedative medication to help them relax in a deep sleep. Dr. Azouz will inject an axillary block for prolonged pain control, which can last up to 24 hours after the procedure.
Patients normally return to all activities about 6 weeks after the surgery, depending on the size of the tumor. The nail can take up to 3-4 months to grow back to its normal appearance.
The cost of surgery has a wide range. Dr. Azouz will obtain a medical history and perform a physical exam to help determine the cost.
