Lipoma Removal Surgery: Dallas Hand Surgeons Dr. David and Solomon Azouz Review Lipomas of the Arm, Forearm, Elbow, and Wrist

Dallas Plastic and Hand Surgeon Dr. David and Solomon Azouz review Lipomas: symptoms, surgical treatment, cost, insurance, and recovery.

What is lipoma?

Lipoma removal surgery removes lipomas, which are slow-growing benign masses that are located between the skin and muscle. The cause of lipoma is unknown, but it can be genetic. They tend to develop in people with certain medical conditions, including Gardner’s syndrome, Madelung’s disease, Cowden syndrome, and Adiposis dolorosa.

What are the symptoms of a lipoma on the forearm?

A lipoma of the forearm is a soft fatty lump on the forearm that can sometimes be painful.

What are the indications for a forearm lipoma removal surgery?

Lipomas can grow large and be bothersome. In some cases, they can press on nerves causing pain and discomfort. The only treatment to remove the lipoma is surgery.

Can a patient have multiple lipomas?

Patients commonly have multiple lipomas throughout the body.

How do you know which lipoma should be removed first?

Usually, it is recommended to remove the largest, those causing decreased function, or those that are the most painful first.

What bad tumors mimic lipomas?

Sometimes a sarcoma can be mistaken for a lipoma.  Sarcomas are bad-acting tumors that grow quickly and are dangerous.

How is surgery for a forearm lipoma removal performed?

Dr. Azouz will make an incision in the forearm and excise the lipoma. In some cases, liposuction can be used to help reduce the size of the lipoma.

What is the anesthesia for a forearm lipoma removal surgery?

As with the majority of hand surgeries, Dr. Azouz uses sedation and local anesthesia. Patients are sedated to help them stay calm in a deep sleep. Dr. Azouz then injects numbing medication into the axilla which numbs the arm and helps with pain control for up to 24 hours after the procedure.

What is the recovery from a forearm lipoma removal surgery?

After the procedure, Dr. Azouz will place a splint over the forearm for protection. It is advised to avoid heavy lifting or exercise until the surgical site heals to prevent infection. Dr. Azouz will see his patients for routine follow-up visits to monitor progress.

What is the cost of forearm lipoma removal surgery?

The cost of surgery has a broad range and many contributing factors. Dr. Azouz will obtain a medical history and perform a physical exam to help determine the costs.
