What is a nerve tumor of the hand?

A nerve tumor is a growth that develops near a nerve.  There are two main types of nerve tumors: benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous).  Benign nerve tumors are not life-threatening and can be removed surgically, especially if they are painful.  Malignant nerve tumors are cancerous and are more difficult to treat.  Cancerous nerve tumors are considered more dangerous and can sometimes represent a different type of cancer pushing on a nerve.   Benign nerve tumors can develop after finger, hand, or wrist nerves are cut.   Dallas Hand surgeon Dr. Azouz can treat nerve tumors of the fingers, hands, wrist, forearm, legs, and body.    


What are the symptoms of a nerve tumor?

Pain especially if it is pressing on a nerve or located in a weight-bearing or functional body parts such as the hand or foot.

When does a nerve tumor require surgery?

Patients need surgery for nerve tumors when they cause symptoms such as putting pressure on surrounding tissues or nerves.  For large tumors, debulking is sometimes needed.   Malignant tumors generally require more involved treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation.

What are the benefits of nerve tumor surgery?

Benefits of nerve tumor surgery include relief of symptoms such as pain, numbness, weakness, and dysesthesia.  Patients can also benefit from improved function and confirmation of diagnosis. 

How is a nerve tumor surgery performed?

Dr. Azouz can exist the nerve tumor and send it to pathology.   A nerve graft is sometimes needed to rebuild the nerve that was damaged from the nerve tumor.

What is the anesthesia for nerve tumor surgery?

Patients are sedated to help them relax. A nerve block will be injected to help with prolonged pain, which can last up to 24 hours after the procedure. 

What is the recovery from a nerve tumor surgery?

Dr. Azouz will place a splint or special bandage over the operation site after the procedure. During routine follow-up visits, Dr. Azouz will assess how healing and may recommend therapy to help with strength and movement. Most patients can return to activities within 4-6 weeks.

What is the cost of a nerve tumor surgery?

Surgical costs can vary extensively. Dr. Azouz will obtain a medical history and perform a physical exam to help determine costs.  If a nerve tumor developed after an at-work injury, then the Worker’s compensation insurance may cover the costs of the surgery.
